Smoking-Hot Carbon-Fiber / Magnesium Wheels · 07/27/2006
Rennworx announced today that it will be the first U.S. distributor of Dymag’s hybrid carbon-fiber / magnesium wheels. Made to fit Ferraris, Porsches, and other supercars—as well as in standard 18", 19", and 20" sizes—the wheels consist of a carbon-fiber barrel fastened to a forged magnesium disc using titanium hardware. According to Rennworx, "the low weight but high stiffness of carbon-fiber rims produces a very lightweight rim, " cutting some 17 lbs off the weight of a standard 18", 30 lb Porsche wheel.
Rennworx said that the wheels’ lightweight materials help "reduce the gyroscope effect of the wheel and ultimately produc[e]…(1) improved acceleration, (2) improved braking [and] reduced stopping distance, (3) lighter, sharper steering, (4) allow[ance] for softer damper settings, giving more tire contact and therefore better grip, (5) [more stable tire temperatures, and] (6) improved wheel and tire handling."
No word yet on when these smoking-hot wheels will hit the street, or for how much—but Dymag’s 17" carbon-fiber / magnesium motorcycle wheels are currently selling for ~$1,400 and up. Each. Tires not included, of course.
